My daughter was three years old when I stopped trusting the word “safe.”

She was eating cereal out of a bright yellow bowl, milk dripping down her chin, laughing at nothing — the way only a three-year-old can. I’d just read that the cereal in that bowl contained trace amounts of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup. The same chemical the World Health Organization classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” back in 2015. The same chemical that a Missouri court found responsible for giving John Durnell non-Hodgkin lymphoma after years of using it on his property.

I looked at my daughter. I looked at the bowl. And something broke inside me that hasn’t healed since.
