Supreme Court Clears Way for Mass Federal Layoffs

The Supreme Court on July 8 lifted a lower court order preventing the Trump administration from carrying out job cuts en masse and restructuring federal agencies. The new ruling lifts U.S. District Judge Susan Illston’s prior order that put large-scale layoffs known as reductions in force from moving forward while the litigation continues in the lower courts. The case is Trump v. American Federation of Government Employees. The Supreme Court said that the district court blocked the government’s actions based on its view that an executive order that President Donald Trump issued and a memorandum by the Office of Management and Budget were “unlawful.”...
